ELDORADO
A poem about the journey of a gallant knight in search of the legendary Eldorado.
'Eldorado' is thought to be one of Poe’s final poems. It was published in 1849 in Flag of Our Union in Boston, around the time of the gold rush.
Alexandra, this episode's director, particularly likes the layers of possible meaning exhibited in the poem: the pursuit of happiness (pointlessly?), the inevitably of death, the distraction of wealth, the misconception that money buys happiness, the time wasted pursuing fantasy — only to find oneself at death's door not having truly lived.
Interestingly, perhaps Poe may have thought of these things too although we can argue he didn't waste his time on earth — Poe died six months after he wrote the piece.
