Brief: In this task I will be explaining four different magazines and their negative and positive representation in the Film industry.
Positive Representation:
This cover page that positively represent women empower the black society in the Film industry. The first Magazine, which is of the famous actress Gal Gadot who plays the character Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot is dressed in her Wonder Woman costume and she is standing fearlessly with direct eye contact giving an powerful and intimidating look towards the audience with a direct eye contact. Her side look gives out her strength that’s she holds within herself. The sell line “she’s wiser, more mature … very much more evolved.” Represents her growth and that women are intelligent and sophisticated. Moreover, the title Wonder Woman can be clearly seen on the cover page in a white font Colour that stands out as as a bold, dashing Colour which is red and orange gives out an eye catching look towards the audience. The female superhero helps to brings the development of making young girls feel strong, brace, confident and inspired as this magazine Total Film is mainly targeting the younger audience. This magazine completelty demolishes the typical stereotype that has lasted for several years in the Film industry about women being often seen as victims, passive weaknesses. The emergence of female superheroes breaks the issues that the female audience is also in fact interested in action films. This magazine is entirely based on the concept of women being independent , bold and powerful.
The following magazine, is the Harper bazaar magazine, It greatly enables the audience to understand the underrepresented group of the black society. To begin with, the well-renowned actor Chadwick Boseman who plays the main lead character of black panther highlighted on the cover page of this magazine. His incredible performance in the film became talk to the town which sparked conversation about African-American actors and their unique talentsIn the past, there had been no African-America Marvel movie which has now created new opportunities and recognition. That begin said, Hollywood in recent times has faced racial discrimination especially in the early 20th century, but as of today more and more people want to be represented and audience want to celebrate more diversity. This magazine significantly demolishes the stereotype that the black society should not be represented in films as thugs, gangsters, or be seen as threats roles such as servants, butlers, maids and slaves in films. This magazine cover page represents, the success of new actors and actresses as main leads, encourages filmmakers to collecltively allow diversity into their films and spread a good message in their films regarding different race.
Negative Representation:
This particular magazine which features the cast of Gossip Girls. The cover represents the models in a negative way as it submits to the stereotype of women and men to flaunt their sexuality in order to promote their show. The models like Blake lively is dressed in a white corset with her legs showing completely while the other model Leighton Meeter is wear a white see through lingerie where the audience can clealry get a view of their bodies. This magazine is a vast issue today as it is represents women as sex objects or as a sexual desire to attract the audience rather actual living, breathing individuals. Their body language and facial expressions give out a seductive look towards the audience which connotes sexuality. The background is completely white with no sell lines that the audience’s eye completely falls on the models. This shows that the entire magazine is based on their bodies rather than anything else which could be important. This magazine does intact represent males and females in a negative way and also makes them naïve, vulnerable and submissive. Women in this magazine are shown passive as they are subjects to male desires and wants in this way.
Moving on to the next Magazine, the main model is of Malika Arora the famous Bollywood actress. This is yet another regressive cover as this magazine aims to show sexualised women and suggest that they are peices of object rather than a human being. The model’s facial expression can be clearly seen as seductive as well as her posture. She is wearing a white swim suit cover with a see through cardigan that depicts her boldness. Her jawline is well defined and her collar bone is noticeable towards the male audience. Moreover, her makeup is smokey giving her a mysterious yet foxy look. All these factors come under the fact that they are represented as an object. The selling “Malika Arora Khan AND SHES HOTTER THAN EVER” attracts the male audience to fulfil men’s sex pleasure and that these actresses have no worth if they are not at least half way naked in their Films. The unfair representation of women reverts back to their traditional representation which is naïve and submissive. These type of magazines are targeted at the younger audience as well, which teaches them from a younger that need to use sex appeal in order to to have a career in the film industry.
