Data can be modulated on to a carrier using different electrical modulation schemes. One of them is Phase Modulation like QPSK. However, if this phase modulated data needs to be transmitted using a photonic multiplier (in order to go for lower RF frequency at the input for energy efficiency) then that can attract some problems. Phase modulated data transmission using photonic multipliers incurs altering the phase information in the signal. Also, high speed optical fiber transmission performance can be severely degraded due to various fiber impairments specially for long fiber lengths ; one such kind being chromatic dispersion in the fiber. 

A part of my research here is to investigate electronic compensation techniques to precode the phase in order to retain the phase information at the receiver. Electronically mitigating the fiber and other impairments both in IM/DD & optical coherent detection system is also a part of my research. Such electronic compensation techniques add flexibility to the dynamically routed optical networks.
