"Frontiers in Mathematics Lecture Series" is an initiative started by the Department of Mathematics this year with a determination to enhance the skills and comprehend intellect of the students.
The first speaker under the "Frontiers in Mathematics Lecture Series" was Dr. Vivek Kumar Aggarwal who delivered a talk on the topic "Some Insight into the Computational Methods" on 30th January 2019. He is an Assistant Professor in Department of Applied Mathematics, Delhi Technological University. With the postgraduation from IIT Roorkee and Ph.D from IIT Kanpur, Dr. Aggarwal's research interest lies in Computational Methods for Differential Equations. In his talk, the speaker highlighted various computational techniques like Gauss Elimination Method, LU Decomposition Method, Gauss Jacobi Method to name a few. The pros and cons of such methods along with their real-life applications were also discussed. The session turned out to be quite engaging and engrossing. This was evident from the question-hour session in which many students cleared their doubts with the speaker.
The second lecture under "Frontiers in Mathematics Lecture Series" was delivered by renowned mathematician Dr. Subramanian Arumugam on the topic "Network Science and its Applications" on 4th February 2019. He is one of the major pillars of graph theory in India. He has just completed 50 years of his academic life. His research interests lie in Graph Theory and its Applications. He has organized more than 25 conferences, published around 250 research papers and 20 books, guided more than 50 PhD students, visited around 20 countries and delivered guest lectures and invited talks. He has established the National Center for Advanced research in Discrete Mathematics (n-CARDMATH) at Kalasalingam University with support from DST. Moreover, he is an Adjunct Professor in Department of Computer Science, Ball State University, USA and a Visiting Professor in Department of Computer Science, Liverpool Hope University, UK. Along with Dr. S. Arumugam, Dr. Purnima Gupta also graced the occasion. She retired as an Associate Professor from Department of Mathematics, Sri Venkateshwara College. Currently, she is the Director of Central Board, State Bank of India and a Visiting Professor in Kalasalingam University. Dr. Arumugam’s talk began with the method of formation the magic square with the specified date of birth. Then his lecture focussed on the Mathematical Analysis of networks and its application to the physical world. He gave interesting real-life applications of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. He also discussed the notion of Erdos number. Srinivasa Ramanujan Erdos number is 3. He ended his lecture with the application of Analysis of Tuberculosis PPI Network. His talk was highly informative and thought-provoking for the students as well as the faculty.
