Inspired by Srinivasa Aiyangar Ramanujan, one of the world’s greatest-ever mathematical genius, the College adheres to the core values of dedication, hard work and commitment as encapsulated in the motto of the University of Delhi – Nistha, Dhriti and Satyam.
Ramanujan College, formerly known as Deshbandhu College (Evening), was established in 1958 by the Ministry of Rehabilitation, Government of India, in the memory of Late Lala Deshbandhu Gupta, a patriot who had dedicated his life to the national freedom struggle. The College is 100% funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and has been maintained by the University of Delhi since 1972. The College opened its gate for women students in 1994. In 2010, the Deshbandhu College (Evening) was renamed as the Ramanujan College. The College became a full-fledged day college since 2012.
For the past decade, the college has been on a path of unprecedented growth. With the introduction of many new courses, and a rapidly expanding infrastructure that seeks to provide the latest facilities, the college boldly looks forward to new challenges of the future.
The Department of Mathematics is one of the long established departments of Ramanujan College. Earlier, B. A. Programme Mathematics and few courses (Business Statistics and Business Mathematics) of B. Com (H) were handled by the Department of Mathematics. In the academic session 2013-14, the Department of Mathematics offered honours course in Mathematics under the FYUP scheme of courses which was later re-framed into three year undergraduate course. Since 2016, the Department is admitting students in B.Sc. (H) Mathematics under the Choice based credit system (CBCS). Apart from honours course, the Department also offers Mathematics as a Discipline Course in BA Programme.
The Department aims to create a solid foundation for the assimilation of mathematical concepts and structures and build mathematical skills like creative, logical and analytical thinking. Software such as Mathematica is used to increase the understanding of the fundamental mathematical concepts. It has a vibrant Society – RamanuGen that promotes student’s interests in the subject by organizing activities with their enthusiastic involvement.
The Department has 8 faculty members with their research interests lying in Algebra, Graph Theory, Complex Analysis, Operator Theory and Applied Mathematics. The faculty is research-oriented has been publishing research articles in peer reviewed national and international journals. Faculty members have also presented their work on international platform as well.

The Department of Mathematics has a vibrant “RamanuGen” society which was formed in July 2014. As the name suggests, the society believes in building mathematical skills like the great Indian mathematician Srinivasa Aiyangar Ramanujan, with the ideas and minds of new generation students. The society works for invigorating and catapulting the talent of students through various competitions and quizzes to enhance their mathematical sharpness. It also invites learned guests to impart their knowledge to the young brilliant minds.
