"I have chosen to live & work in an International Community of Auroville, in South India, after my graduation studies in Painting as major from MS University, Fine Arts department & post graduate masters in Ceramics from National Institute of Design; Both my alma matter are one of the finest institutes of its kind and with unique approach to design education; this is where these skills & my education was tested in a realistic, challenging work environment of community ownership, diverse cultures and a holistic approach to art, design and production in my body of work. I have also worked with master artists and artisans, curated shows, organised workshops and have set up my fully equipped studio amidst natural surroundings, close to my family home.
My studio strives to create a unique identity of its own for Indian Contemporary Ceramics & to make its mark on the world of Ceramics; to take our ancient pottery traditions to a new age ceramics tradition that is truly Universal in its language and appeal.
Challenges of survival & finding unique expression in the mainstream of contemporary Indian Ceramics fraternity, has given direction & defined my work life balance. Over last 20 years, I have worked on several projects ranging from functional ceramics, terracotta and utilitarian objects to large scale commission works, international residencies. My own passion for experimenting with clay as a medium that can transit from a humble craft to serious art work has enhanced my work. My various collaborations, workshops, learning from experts have given me the confidence, vitality and courage to go beyond my own capacity and create large scale installations. While impressions from extensive travels in rural India has shaped and found its place in my forms & techniques, my painting background has embellished it with images, marks and splashes of all learnings.
Over several years, i have participated in group shows, solos, curated and organised workshops, learning from various roles as a practicing artist. Be it working with NGOs or artisans groups from Kutch and Chhatisgarh & collaboration with architects, art curators, for specific projects or large scale commissions, it has all taught me the art of survival in this challenging field. This is continuation of my concern for ceramic practitioners relevance and respect in the contemporary art world.
My quaint natural studio surrounding has given me space and energy to imbibe all these experiences into my work that has evolved with each challenge converted to opportunity, widening my horizons, inwardly and outwardly. I continue my intense practice at my studio in Auroville, South India where I am settled with my family.
