Fall 2017 Milestones

One of the first tasks required of this project was to write down the objectives, or milestones, necessary in order to complete the design. Deadlines for each milestone were determined by the group. While most of the milestones were turned in on the dates originally specified, there were several that had to be pushed back to do weather and/or faulty equipment. The final date each milestone was completed is reported below.

October 6, 2017 - Create Topographic Map of Site

LiDAR data was collected from the Kentucky Geography Network. The site was shown to have a change in elevation of two feet. An excerpt from the map showing the site is shown below; a more detailed map can be found in the design package.

Yellow - 2 foot contour lines

Red - entire site area

Blue - saturated area

October 13, 2017 - Soils Analysis Report

Eight total soil samples were taken from two different locations within site area. The full results are shown in the Test Results tab. The averages for the two dig sites are shown below. Sample 1 was taken within the saturated area while Sample 2 was taken outside of the saturated area.

The following tests were conducted on the soil:

  • Routine Soil Test
  • Total Nitrogen
  • Organic Matter
  • Texture Class
  • Soluble Salts

October 20, 2017 - Site Hydrology Analysis

Hydrological Analysis showed that the site had varying degrees of infiltration. Three different curve numbers (CN) were calculated using ArcGIS.

October 27, 2017 - List of Selected Plants for Rain Garden

Plants native to Kentucky and with high evapotranspiration rates and root filtration systems were selected due to their suitability to the local ecosystem and their ability to improve water quality. In addition, advantageous pollinator plants were also selected.

The following plants are offered by the University of Kentucky Horticulture Club, they are easily accessible and offered at a reduced rate.

  • Swamp Milkweed
  • Eastern Purple Coneflower
  • Buttonbush
  • Big Bluestem
