An umbrella term is used to refer to a wide-range subject instead of a specific sexuality or identity. Queer is an umbrella term with the numerous sexualities under it. Genderqueer is an umbrella term with the numerous gender identities under it. Bisexual, asexual, aromanitc, non-binary: all of these are umbrella terms. Using an umbrella term instead of identifying with a specific sexuality or identity may be more comfortable for some. Identifying with a specific sexuality or identity may make someone feel pressured, and if someone ever finds that their current sexuality may not represent them accurately they feel guilty changing. Umbrella terms aren’t for everyone, if it is more comfortable to identify with a specific sexuality or identity then do what is comfortable. What’s key is feeling comfortable with expressing yourself, whether that’s by labeling yourself, remaining unlabeled, identifying with an umbrella term, or identifying with a specific sexuality or identity.
