Neo-pronouns are a category of pronouns used in place of “she”, “he”, or “they”. People use them, mainly, because they feel that those pronouns more accurately depict their gender identity and they feel more comfortable using them. An example would be xe/xer, ze/zir, and ey/em. Though most commonly used by non-cisgender people, they can be used by anyone. Pronunciation varies from person to person so if you’re worried about pronunciation it’s best to ask the individual who uses them. Neo-pronouns are used just like other pronouns, for example: “He went to the doctor” becomes “Ze went to the doctor.” Neo-pronouns are not difficult to use, so respect those who use them.
