What a Happy Surprise!
RAIN occasionally gets visits by a north state woman who lives in her car along with her dogs. She came to RAIN one day with a kitten she had rescued - but her dogs had injured it before she could bring it to the rescue. The damage was severe enough that the kitten could no longer use its back legs and was incontinent. He could only drag himself around with his front legs.
We accepted the kitten and took it to the vet for evaluation. She was told nothing could be done to repair the damage to its spine and nerves. Euthanasia was recommended but declined. She took “Surprise” home and began the process of trying to figure out how he could live a good life. There were multiple challenges and he needed time-consuming care.
Surprise was posted on Petfinder's as a special needs kitty, in the long shot hope that someone who seemed trustworthy would see him and step up. Just a few days later Meghan got a call from a former adopter whose own cat had gotten very ill and was left with permanent damage somewhat similar to Surprise’s injuries. The family felt that they could take on a second special needs kitty and it could be a friend for their first cat.
We still get updates, and Surprise is now in this third year with a family of his own!
