The RAILS BIPOC Library Workers Mentorship Program is for library professionals in all stages of development who identify as BIPOC. Students, library workers of all levels and library types are invited to apply. The goal is for individuals who identify as BIPOC to build relationships, share experiences, and develop skills to advance in their careers. We all have something to share.
Discover the importance of mentorship through the experiences of mentors and mentees of the prior year’s program.
How It Works
The program lasts 4 months and will have monthly planned activities by the RAILS BIPOC Library Workers Mentorship Group. Mentors and mentee participants are expected to connect outside of the regularly planned cohort meetings. Mentor/mentee pairs will take time to get to know each other, discuss goals and expectations, and plan on attending professional development and recreational events together.
By the end of the program, you can expect to have gone on a journey of personal growth! Mentees will have taken actionable steps to accomplish goals, and mentors will have learned more about themselves through teaching. More so, everyone who participates in the mentorship program will have established a lasting relationship with their mentor/mentee and the RAILS Mentorship Cohort they are a part of.
Application is now available! Deadline June 16, 2025
Lift up your fellow BIPOC library workers and students by becoming a mentor! Mentors support their mentee through coaching, skill sharing, and relationship building. If you enjoy getting to know people and helping people accomplish their goals, this is a great place to start. Mentors will achieve personal growth throughout the process, too!
All of us have something valuable to offer - mentors do not have to be library staff who are in management or leadership positions.
Are you looking for someone to help support your career goals? Thinking through a problem and want someone to bounce ideas off of? Do you need someone who can listen and understand the complexities of working in a library as a BIPOC individual? Take a step towards developing yourself and become a mentee.
All of us are learning - library staff of any title may be a mentee, not just emerging professionals.
