Marita Canina is an associate professor at the Department of Design, Politecnico di Milano, where she also serves as scientific director of IDEActivity Center. Her research blends research in design, creativity studies and a people&planet-centered approach to develop methods that empower the creative design process, experimenting with innovative approaches based on Design and Future Thinking. Since 2015, he has explored the impact of the digital transition on creativity, coordinating research funded by the European Community, including the Horizon Europe project MUSAE: a human-centered factory for a future technological sustainable development driven by arts (2022-2025). This project aims to integrate Design Future Art methods into (E)DIHs to strategically drive digital technological innovation, addressing future challenges in the food sector to improve the well-being of people and the planet.
In a world where innovation races ahead of reflection, the fusion of art and technology offers a powerful compass for navigating toward ethical and sustainable futures. This keynote explores why art–tech collaboration matters now more than ever, exploring its opportunities and challenges for tech innovation. Design Futures Art-driven (DFA) method will be presented - a creative and future-driven approach that blends Design Futures and Art Thinking, artistic vision with technological expertise to envision, design, and prototype alternative futures. Through insights from 11 art–tech residencies, we will see how future scenarios and tangible prototypes emerge as tools for critical reflection and real-world change in the area of Food as Medicine. Central to this process is the MUSAE Factory Model, a structured, vision-led approach enabling diverse stakeholders to co-create responsibly. Beyond professional practice, the DFA method can also be applied in the sector of education, equipping students with the mindset and skills to imagine and build futures that serve both people and planet. Together, we will explore how future-driven imagination becomes innovation with purpose.
