MRI utilizes a strong magnetic field, radio waves, and a computer to generate highly detailed images of the body's internal structures. These images are clearer and more precise than those produced by other imaging techniques, making MRI particularly effective at identifying and diagnosing various diseases. It is commonly used to assess a wide range of conditions, such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and musculoskeletal abnormalities. MRI is a non-invasive procedure and does not involve the use of ionizing radiation (Katti et al.,2011).
PREPARATION
BEFORE GOING FOR YOUR MRI SCAN: WHAT TO DO
The patient is advised to arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled appointment to complete any required paperwork.
The radiology staff will provide the patient with details about any specific preparations needed for the MRI procedure. It is important for the patient to notify the radiographer if they have any of the following: a pacemaker, aneurysm clip, neuro-stimulators, cochlear implants, recent surgeries, any allergies, or if they experience claustrophobia.
Additionally, the patient should change into a hospital gown and remove any jewelry(nibib,2024)
WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR APPOINTMENT DAY
On the day of the exam, the patient will complete a questionnaire and consent form. Before the exam begins, the patient will be positioned inside the MRI machine, and devices with coils that send and receive radio waves may be placed near the area being examined. For claustrophobic patients, the radiologist may administer a mild sedative to ensure they remain calm and comfortable throughout the procedure. Patients will be instructed not to eat or drink after midnight the night before the exam (or at least six hours prior to the procedure). The radiographer will perform the exam from a computer outside the room, while maintaining communication with the patient. If the patient feels uncomfortable, an alert button is available to signal the need to exit the machine. A contrast material injection, which enhances the visibility of specific tissues or blood vessels, may be given about halfway through the exam. To reduce the impact of the prolonged noise during the procedure, headphones with music of the patient’s choice will
