A computerized X-ray imaging method involves directing a narrow beam of X-rays at a patient while rotating it rapidly around the body. This produces signals that the machine's computer processes to create cross-sectional images, known as "slices," of the body. These tomographic images provide more detailed information about the internal organs compared to standard X-rays (Sera, 2020)
CT imaging is an excellent tool for examining the head, neck, chest, abdomen, and pelvis, as well as for assessing complex fractures. Additionally, it can be utilized to assist with biopsies, joint injections, and various other minimally invasive procedures (Sera, 2020).
PREPARATION: WHAT TO DO ?
BEFORE YOU ENTER A CT SCAN
Patient should let the radiographers know if there is any chance of pregnancy.
Depending on the area of the body being scanned, the patient may need to :
Remove some or all of their clothing and put on a hospital gown.
Take off any metal items, such as belts, jewelry, dentures, and glasses, that could interfere with the imaging results.
Avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the scan (Cleveland Clinic,2023).
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR CT SCAN
When patient arrives for the CT scan, the CT technologist will guide the patient into the scanning room, where they will be asked to lie down on the patient table and be instructed to remain still. The procedure is painless, but in some cases, they may need to swallow a liquid contrast material to enhance the visibility of the stomach, small intestine, and colon. Preparation may vary depending on the area being examined. The technologist will position the body so that the part being scanned is centered in the large doughnut-shaped scanner, which is less than 3 feet deep and contains the X-ray tube and electronic detector (Cleveland Clinic, 2023).
Although the technologist will leave the room during the scan, they will be able to see and communicate with the patient through a window. The scanner does not come into contact with the patient, and patients won’t feel the X-rays; however, it may make some noise, and the table might shift slightly to provide a better view. The procedure typically lasts between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on the area being studied, the complexity of the case, and whether any contrast agents are needed (Cleveland Clinic, 2023).
