Influence Public Discourse
Influence Public Discourse
This paper was completed for Dr. Brunette's Argumentation Analysis course. It examines how two op-eds on abortion, one pro-life article and one pro-choice article, used rhetorical strategies to sway public opinion on one of the most debated and polarized issues in the United States. This paper focuses on methods such as Toulmin's model of argumentation, Aristotle's artistic proofs, Dissoi Logoi, and traditional and Johnson-form fallacies. This project allowed me to compare two opposing arguments and identify how authors used rhetoric to appeal to their audience.
This artifact satisfies the Communication Studies program outcome Influencing Public Discourse because I had to critically think and examine how public messages can affect the public. This analysis helped me understand the power of our phrasing and how persuasive language can sway an audience. This project helped me understand how to evaluate arguments, specifically counterarguments, and how writers use them to reinforce their positions. This allows me to create clearer and effective points in arguments.
