Community Engaged Learning: Vincentian Home
At this skilled nursing facility, my classmates and I created activities to promote quality of life and to facilitate social participation within the group. We were here once a week for four weeks. I worked as the lead communicator to ensure we had all the tools we needed and that the activities planned were engaging to the residents.
Community Engaged Learning: Family Resources Therapeutic Preschool
This organization supports children who are at risk for or have experience with abuse. I was part of a three person group who went to the preschool once a week for eight weeks. We each planned an activity centered around sensory integration and developing sensory diets for each child. I was the lead communicator at this site and my main role was to forward questionnaires and session plans and to ask questions as needed.
Level I Fieldwork: Tykes Camp, Belize
My first fieldwork experience was with children with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Belize. This week long camp taught me the importance of thinking on my feet, communication, and allowing children to explore. I worked with two individuals who both had an Autism diagnosis. Additionally, I created the activities of daily living (ADL) section of the family packet which aimed to improve child participation at home. We also had the opportunity to perform home visits and evaluate children all around the area. Not only did I work with other OT students but I also collaborated with the speech students who were part of our team. We all worked as a team to develop activities every day that promoted fine motor, gross motor, sensory and social participation skills.
