Although many PA schools in Texas do not specifically require a certain amount of shadowing, medical volunteering hours, or patient care hours, these health care experiences make applicants competitive and stand out. I have been working towards these experience categories throughout my undergraduate career and will continue to work toward these hours over my gap year.
Medical Volunteer
Before beginning college, I gained valuable experience as a medical volunteer through several organizations. With the American Red Cross, I contributed to public health campaigns by promoting preventive healthcare practices, providing education on sanitation, nutrition, and hygiene, and completing over 200 hours of dedicated service.
I also served as a Junior Volunteer at Houston Methodist Hospital, where I completed over 200 hours of service. My responsibilities included organizing and managing medical supplies for staff distribution, assisting nurses with administrative tasks such as filing paperwork and maintaining inventory, and providing emotional support to patients while monitoring and reporting changes in their conditions to the attending physician.
Shadowing Student
Toward the second semester of my freshman year, I had the privilege of shadowing Dr. Nadish Garg, a cardiologist in the Houston area. This experience allowed me to gain direct exposure to the daily responsibilities of a practicing physician and provided a deeper understanding of patient-centered care in a clinical environment. During my time with Dr. Garg, I had the opportunity to assist with basic patient care activities, including measuring vital signs and observing physical examinations. I was also able to learn about the workflow of a clinical practice, gaining insight into how physicians interact with patients, coordinate with staff members, and manage both medical and administrative responsibilities. Dr. Garg provided additional learning opportunities by teaching me how to operate an EKG machine and interpret its basic output, which gave me a first-hand understanding of the importance of diagnostic tools in cardiology. This experience not only enhanced my technical knowledge but also fostered a greater appreciation for the precision, attentiveness, and compassion required in the physician’s role.
Medical Volunteer
After my freshman year of college, I returned to Houston Methodist Hospital as an Adult Volunteer, where I completed over 230 hours of service. My responsibilities included some of the same tasks, such as organizing and managing medical supplies for staff distribution and assisting nurses with administrative tasks like filing paperwork and maintaining inventory. In this role, I also had the opportunity to participate in Patient Satisfaction Rounding, engaging in one-on-one conversations with patients to gather feedback about their care and overall hospital experience. Through these interactions, I was able to contribute to efforts aimed at enhancing patient satisfaction and improving the quality of care. Additionally, I supported the staff of a medical-surgical unit, which allowed me to observe the hospital’s operations and gain deeper insight into the complexities of healthcare delivery.
Shadowing Student
During my sophomore year at UT, I continued to shadow Dr. Garg during every break from school.
Research Experience
At the end of my fall semester, I was selected to serve as an Undergraduate Research Assistant for UT's Project SEED. To participate in this study, I obtained Institutional Review Board (IRB) certification, ensuring that I was trained in research ethics and participant protection. Project SEED is a longitudinal study examining how language brokering in medical settings impacts the long-term stress levels of children who serve as translators for their parents. In this role, I actively contributed to the research process by collecting data directly from participants and assisting in the analysis of findings. This experience allowed me to gain valuable hands-on exposure to research methodology, data handling, and the study of psychosocial dynamics within healthcare contexts.
Patient Care Experience
During the spring and summer of my sophomore year, I earned my BLS certification and completed training as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Through this experience, I gained practical skills in providing patient care within hospital and rehabilitation settings. This hands-on training not only enhanced my clinical abilities but also reaffirmed my commitment to pursuing a career in healthcare.
Global Health Experience
In the summer of 2024, I had the privilege of participating in a medical mission trip to Peru with the Global Medical Training organization. This experience allowed me to travel abroad with a group of fellow UT students and contribute to providing healthcare to underserved communities. During the trip, we established clinics in schools and churches, offering free basic medical services to several communities. We served hundreds of patients and had the invaluable opportunity to participate in patient diagnosis and treatment under the guidance of local physicians.
Shadowing Student
During my junior year at UT, I continued shadowing Dr. Garg during school breaks, where I was introduced to his Physician Assistant, Annalise Arras. This was my first experience shadowing a PA, and it was a truly affirming experience that solidified my desire to pursue this career path. In addition, I began shadowing Dr. Jason Miller, a highly respected podiatrist in the Houston area. Through this opportunity, I was able to observe surgical procedures and assist with minor clinical treatments, further expanding my exposure to patient care across different settings.
Research Experience
In the fall of 2024, I was promoted to Co-Lead Undergraduate Research Assistant for UT's Project SEED. In this role, I continued to contribute to data collection and analysis while also taking on greater leadership responsibilities within the project. I was responsible for developing protocols for make-up meetings and leading sessions where I facilitated discussions and ensured accountability among the research assistants. This experience strengthened both my research skills and my ability to lead a team effectively.
Patient Care Experience
In the spring of my junior year, I began working as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Onion Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. In this role, I provide direct, hands-on care to patients, supporting them with their daily activities of living such as mobility, hygiene, nutrition, and overall comfort. This position has allowed me to develop strong patient care skills while fostering meaningful relationships with individuals in both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care settings. Working alongside nurses and other healthcare professionals has also given me valuable insight into interdisciplinary collaboration, communication, and the importance of compassion in healthcare. My experiences at Onion Creek have not only strengthened my clinical skills but also deepened my commitment to pursuing a career as a Physician Assistant.
Global Health Experience
I attended another medical mission trip abroad through GMT in the summer of 2025 to the Dominican Republic. Throughout the trip, we set up temporary clinics in schools and churches, where we provided free basic healthcare services to multiple communities. We cared for hundreds of patients and gained invaluable experience by assisting in the diagnosis and treatment process under the supervision of local physicians.
Shadowing Student
During my senior year, I continued shadowing Dr. Nadish Garg and his Physician Assistant, Annalise Arras, during school breaks, further strengthening my understanding of the PA profession. I also took every opportunity to shadow Dr. Jason Miller, gaining additional exposure to patient care and clinical practice.
Research Experience
In the fall semester of my senior year, I earned both my OH 218 Bloodborne Pathogen Certification and my OH Biological Safety Certification. Through this training, I gained a comprehensive understanding of laboratory safety protocols, infection control practices, and proper handling of biological materials. These certifications emphasized the importance of maintaining safe and ethical research environments, protecting both patients and healthcare workers from unnecessary risk, and adhering to established safety standards.
Patient Care Experience
Throughout my senior year, I continued working as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Onion Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where I further built upon my hands-on patient care experience. This role allowed me to consistently support patients with their daily needs, strengthen my clinical skills, and deepen my understanding of compassionate, patient-centered care.
Global Health Experience
Over winter break of my senior year, I attended a medical mission trip abroad through GMT to Panama. And this summer after I graduate, I will be traveling to Nicaragua to serve on another medical mission trip!
My diverse experiences in healthcare have solidified my conviction that pursuing a career as a Physician Associate is the right path for me. Over the coming years, I intend to engage in opportunities that will deepen my enthusiasm for the PA profession while equipping me with the skills and knowledge essential for success in PA school and my future career.
Volunteering has been a meaningful way for me to put others ahead of myself, which is essential in healthcare. These experiences have taught me the importance of compassion, patience, and cultural sensitivity while fostering a deeper connection with my community. Moving forward, I plan to continue volunteering in healthcare-related settings that allow me to support underserved populations, enhancing both my personal growth and professional readiness as a future PA.
