Purpose of this tool:
The modules contained in this educational tool are designed to support schools to learn about or reinforce prior learning across their school communities, focussed on issues related to racism and discrimination.
The goal is to strengthen foundational learning and understanding of related concepts.
Anticipated Outcomes:
School communities are better able to better create inclusive, diverse, anti-racist and equitable learning environments, and to achieve sustainable changes to behaviours and attitudes.
Learners demonstrate a greater understanding of racsim and discrimination and impacts.
There is a decrease in or elimnaton of, incidents of racism and discrimination in school communities.
How to use this educational tool for greatest impact:
The learning modules should be rolled out in numerical order and over a number of successive days or weeks:
Module one provides the background and context within which HCDSB schools are situated in regards to board policy and procedures.
Module two to module six provide comprehensive learning on relevant concepts, terminology with examples.
Module seven provides a targeted student ‘workshop’ to provide an opportunity for students to reflect deeper and demonstrate learning.
In addition to the modules mentioned above, ‘Additional Resources’ are currently being compiled to supplement learning and will be live shortly.
This approach will support learners at all levels (staff, students) to take time to connect to and internalize the material over an extended period, recognizing that this type of learning requires a deeper dive with time for reflection.
