10:00-10:50am - Virtual Brown Bag Brunch: Brainstorming and sharing ideas related the meeting theme and what they might be doing in their courses to address the theme of humanizing, belonging, and engaging students in online learning
The following are three 10-minute presentations about what faculty are currently doing to help foster humanizing, belonging, and engaging to help spur our brainstorming during this session.
This presentation will use online discussion platforms to create a sense of belonging and increase student engagement among students. Specifically, it will show how using VoiceThread in an asynchronous online course can create community while having complex discussions allowing students to proces the topics and feel connected with peers and instructors.
Presented by Amber Bell, Lincoln University
This presentation will show using Mastery Paths in Canvas as a remediation tool for students who are having difficulty with learning the material in an online or hybrid course. This helps the students know that their instructors care about their learning, and give them just-in-time remediation so that they do not fall behind. It also gives a human interaction so that students feel more connected with their instructors.
Presented by Kate Foster, St Charles Community College
This presentation will discuss various ways to engage student in class such as offering methods for anonymous participation (Padlet, Mentimeter, and Quizizz). By offering methods for anonymous participation, it enables students to speak up on discussion topics they may not otherwise have participated in. This, in turn, engages them in their learning and provides a sense of belonging.
