Psychometric Testing

What is Psychometric Testing?

Psychometric testing involves the use of scientifically validated instruments that aim to objectively measure psychological constructs such as IQ, personality dimensions, and symptom severity. They also are used to detect and diagnose learning disabilities, giftedness, strengths and weaknesses, and developmental disabilities. Psychometric testing is used to support the diagnostic process and does not replace the clinical judgment of clinician.

Additionally, psychometric tests can aid in creating more effective treatment plans, help guide a physician's decisions about medication management, or measure a client's progress in treatment.

We offer two types of psychometric tests at QCBHA: psychodiagnostic and psychoeducational assessments. Psychodiagnostic assessments involve tests that aim to clarify diagnostic impressions through the measurement of symptom presence, severity, and clinical impairment. Psychoeducational assessments measure a student's cognitive, academic, and socio-emotional functioning and can be used to determine if a student is eligible for special education services or accommodations.

When is Psychometric Testing Useful?

For most clients, a clinical interview is all that is necessary for a therapist to arrive at a diagnosis so that treatment can begin. However, there are many people who may have a unique presentation of symptoms and circumstances or multiple co-occurring syndromes that make it more challenging to diagnose accurately with just a clinical interview alone. For those clients, a more in-depth psychological assessment may be necessary.

By using a variety of carefully selected tests in addition to clinical interviews of the client, their close family members, and friends a diagnostician can collect and analyze all of the information they'll need to arrive at an accurate diagnosis

Psychoeducational/Academic testing can be useful to those who have children who may be struggling to learn in the classroom for a variety of reasons. Through the strategic administration of specific psychometric tests, we can identify underlying learning disabilities in the areas of reading, writing and math. We can also determine if your child may benefit from an advanced learning plan (giftedness). Our team can help you navigate the process of discussing an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or a 504 plan evaluation with your child's school (Note: the decision of eligibility for an IEP or 504 plan will be determined by the school district team).

Will my insurance cover Psychometric Assessment?

Many private insurance plans do cover Psychodiagnostic Assessments. If you call and provide us with your insurance information we can check if your individual plan covers all or part of the psychometric testing.* At this time we do not offer coverage for Medicaid/State/Medicare insurance plans.

Psychological evaluations that are court-ordered or are being used for court proceedings are not covered under insurance.

Psychoeducational Assessments are done by Emily Grooms, a licensed School Psychologist, and while insurance will not cover for these services, we offer a Sliding Scale Fee based on income to make testing much more affordable based on household income. Please contact our Front Desk for additional information on our Sliding Scale Fee.

Note: Psychoeducational Assessments are not available to students enrolled in Moline/Coal Valley School District #40, Seton Catholic School, or QC Christian School

*This check is done as a courtesy and it is the plan holder’s responsibility to verify any benefits check that QCBHA performs. Insurance companies can not guarantee their coverage reports are accurate until claims are processed and finalized.

Do I need a referral from my doctor to get an assessment?

This will depend on your plan--contact your insurer to be sure. We are happy to be able to provide assessment services with or without a doctor or specialist referral, though your insurer may require a referral first. If you are a practitioner looking to make a referral please follow this link for our Patient Referral Form.

How much will my assessment cost me out of pocket?
