LESSON 6
Themes
Discuss the themes present in the balcony scene
Begin to analyze Romeo's soliloquy
Themes are ideas that run all the way through a literary text. They are great to analyse because you can discuss the writer's intentions: what have they done? Why? What are they trying to make the reader and audience think and feel?
In "Romeo and Juliet" there a three main themes, all three themes interlink, as Shakespeare wanted to illustrate how love, conflict and family intertwine with one another. He also wanted to show that sometimes, through love, we can also hate.
A soliloquy is a speech in a play in which an actor speaks to himself or herself and to the audience, rather than to another actor.
Read Act 2, Scene 2, is there a soliloquy in this scene?
Step 1) Read the scene, what do you think is happening in the scene?
Step 2) Re-read the scene, which themes do you think are present in this scene?
Step 3) Read the scene a third time, how does Romeo describe Juliet? Write down or underline any words or phrases that stand out to you.
Step 4) What words can you find that are associated with light? Write them down!
Step 5) Shakespeare uses natural imagery to show how Romeo feels about Juliet. What does this tell us about his feelings for Juliet? Consider what Romeo compares Juliet too.
