QUARTER 4
LESSON 2
Learn about archaic words and how to understand them.
Read and understand verses from the Qur'an.
Words used in the passages from the Qur'an are notably formal and well-chosen. In religious texts, the words can be archaic or obsolete.
Archaic words are terms belonging to the early period of art and culture. These have modern versions in our language. It is better to refrain from using these words in writing.
Try to decode these archaic words by saying their modern equivalent.
Modern equivalent: "You" or "Yours"
Modern equivalent: "Are."
For example "Thou art" = "You are"
Modern equivalent: "Do/does"
Modern equivalent: "Has"
Modern equivalent: "Shall"
Modern equivalent: "Will"
The following sentences are taken from the Qur'an.
Which words are considered archaic?
In your own words, simplify these sentences by writing the essence of the verses based on your understanding.
Allah heareth and knoweth all things.
Translation: Allah hears and knows all things - he is everywhere, and he is in everything.
Truth stands out clear from Error, whoever rejects Evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.
Translation: There is a clear right from wrong, whoever believes in Allah, rejects evil and chooses good and truth, and Allah will be with them forever.
Mankind were one community, and Allah sent (unto them) prophets as bearers of good tidings, and as warners, and revealed therewith the Scripture with the truth that it might judge between mankind concerning that wherein they differed.
Translation: Allah sent the prophets bearing his word, which was the truth, to judge who has right and who was wrong. So that mankind could learn right from wrong.
And only onto those whom (the Scripture) was given differed concerning it, after clear proofs had come onto them, through hatred one of another.
Translation: Those who received the Word of Allah, and still disagreed about right or wrong, even after receiving the truth about right and wrong -- disagreed because of their rivalry.
And Allah by His Will guided those who believe unto the truth of that concerning which they differed. Allah guideth whom He will unto a straight path.
Translation: Allah shows right from wrong, and those who follow him, will live their life on the right and good path.
