Learn how to use transition words.
TRANSITION WORDS
Words and phrases that connect ideas or sentences and paragraphs for coherence. They also indicate building up new ideas or thoughts or compare ideas or draw conclusion.
This is how it feels when your sentences and ideas are not connected in your writing.
SUNSHINE
Simultaneously, we all made a stop
Unfortunately, the journey was rough
Nonetheless, everyone was safe
Similarly, the children were unhurt
However, with lots of twists and turns
In other words, the journey was full of challenges
Nevertheless, it all went well
Eventually, it came to an end
1. Comparison and Contrast
This transition emphasizes the things that are the same or the things that are different.
My mom loves pasta, but she dislikes spaghetti. Similarly, she does not like lasagna. On the other hand, she loves macaroni. Likewise, she loves ravioli, cannelloni and tortellini.
2. Time/Chronology/Sequence
This transition helps define time and it helps in explaining the order of something.
Before you go to the stadium to watch your favourite basketball game, make sure that you have your snacks and video camera that you will use during the game. Later, you will find it enjoyable when you can simultaneously eat while videotaping.
3. Cause and Effect
This transition shows the relationship between the reason and consequences of an action.
Since you have been a consistent honour student, you would graduate cum laude. As a result, you would have a better chance to find a job, because some companies would prefer applicants with impressive school records. Therefor your future looks promising.
4. Illustration/Example
This transition adds emphasis or introduces evidence.
Mateo loves vegetables. Truly, he is happy to eat them every day - namely, carrots, broccoli and peas. To demonstrate his love for vegetables, Mateo is planning a vegetable party for all his friends.
5. Addition
This transition adds similar information to the sentence.
When there is a trusting relationship coupled with positive communication, equally couples will be able to overcome difficult situations.
