Grade Info
There are many misconceptions floating around about grades, earned credit, and requirements within majors. Remember:
Earning credit in a course is not the same as meeting pre-reqs to advance to the next course!
The minimum grade to earn credit in a class is a D- or higher.
The minimum grade to meet pre-reqs to advance to the next course MAY be higher than a D-!
In particular:Â
For MA/STAT courses, C- or higher is the usual target.
Notable exceptions: MA 42100 [B- in 35100], 42800 [B- in 34100, C- in 35100], 44000/45000 [B- in 35301], 45401 [B- in 45300/45000].
For CS courses, C or higher is the usual target. This applies even if you are not a CS major!Â
For PHYS courses, D- or higher is the usual target.
Notable exceptions: Math pre-reqs up to calc 3 (i.e. calc 1 and 2) require a C- or higher. Math substitutions for PHYS 306/307 have higher minima (see PHYS major page).
YOU are responsible for verifying that you have met whatever the target is!
Your major GPA (the GPA in the "major in ____" part of your myPurduePlan) needs to be a 2.0 for the standard version of most majors (2.5 for ACSC and MAED).
This means you can get occasional grades below 2.0 (C-, D+, D, or D-) and still graduate with no issues.
Honors majors have higher GPA requirements. The GPA requirements may be within individual classes, within all classes in a department, within all classes in the major block, or in any combination of these factors.
The most recent grade (not necessarily the highest) in a class is used for GPA calculations.
If you already meet pre-reqs for the next class in your first attempt, only repeat the course if you are sure you'll do better the second/third time around!
Purdue credit has priority over transfer credit for the purposes of establishing GPA.Â
Pre-Req Table
I got tired of looking these up during appointments, so I put them here. Double-check w/catalog if in doubt, as these are technically not "official." Last updates were:
MATH/STAT: SU 25
PHYS/CHM: FA 25
MGMT/CS: FA 25Â
Legend
MAED = counts only for math ed degree; DS = data science majors only; MAHO = required for MATH honors degree ; ASHO = required for actuarial science honors degree
Red text = Fall only class ; Blue text = Spring only classÂ
[CC] = pre-req may be taken concurrently ; SR+ = seniors and up may enroll ; JR+ = juniors and up may enroll ; GR = graduate students up may enroll
SOA exam names (FM, FAM, ALTAM, ASTAM) indicated UEC courses for those exams.
CS class can only be taken in off-peak semesters by declared CS minors. This restriction does not apply to dual majors with CS/DS/AI.
AP Credit Legend: The official Purdue tables are here. My table displays all exams at once rather than one-at-a-time.
Red = Culture standalone (not part of language sequence)
Blue = Civics literacy pathway course
Scores of 3 on BOTH micro- and macroeconomics will be equivalent to ECON 210.
Scores of 3 on ONE of micro- or macroeconomics AND a 4 or 5 on the other is equivalent to ECON 210 plus the course where a 4 or 5 was earned.
If the tables do not display in your browser correctly, the direct link to the original version is here. Since the tables are now embedded directly as HTML, I won't likely update the Google sheet much. You are still responsible for checking requirements through the university catalog when in doubt.
Poor Man's DPGs
When you just need to remember the recommended math sequence...
STHO
Follow MASI/STMA DPG and take 3 of the 5 courses below:
MA 44000 (needs B- or better in MA 35301)
MA 44200 (needs B- or better in MA 35301)
MA 45000 (needs B- or better in MA 35301)
STAT 51600
STAT 51700
Will likely need to take linear 2 earlier in DPG.
