Juana  lives in Bogota, Columbia and only speaks Spanish.  She is in elementary school and loves a lot of things, but especially her dog Lucas. They are best friends. She's excited for the first day of school, but unfortunately it doesn't go as planned and on top of everything else, her teacher tells the class that this year they will learn "the English".

Juana is not happy about learning a language that makes little sense to her, but the other students think it's a good idea.  She fights learning English every chance she gets. She has some funny thoughts and questions about the English language. “Why are read and read written the same way but sound different?" she asks.

Juana doesn't have a change of heart until her abuela tells her that they are taking a very special trip where speaking English will be very useful.  It's to see her favorite hero - Astroman! Juana's English learning adventure begins and she works very hard. In the end, she sees the value of  learning another language.
