Thank you for your interest in serving as a Room Parent! Your willingness to support your classroom helps create a positive experience for students, families, and teachers.
A Room Parent serves as a communication and coordination partner for the teacher and helps connect classroom families with the PTO. The role is flexible, rewarding, and designed to support—not add stress to—a teacher's workload.
While every teacher's needs are a little different, Room Parents typically help with:
Share teacher-approved classroom updates and reminders.
Communicate important dates for:
Classroom parties
Field trips
Spirit Days
Special projects
Volunteer opportunities
Help ensure all classroom families receive timely information.
Share classroom supply requests or Amazon Wish Lists provided by the teacher.
Help organize donations or requested classroom materials.
Coordinate volunteers when requested.
Assist with organizing:
Classroom parties
Field trip chaperones
Teacher appreciation activities
Classroom celebrations
Snack or donation sign-ups
Online sign-up tools (such as SignUpGenius) make this easy and organized.
One of the most important parts of being a Room Parent is helping connect your classroom with the PTO.
You may:
Share PTO announcements with your classroom families.
Encourage participation in PTO events.
Help families learn about volunteer opportunities.
Direct PTO-related questions to the appropriate PTO contact.
By helping families stay informed, you play an important role in building a stronger school community.
Room Parents help lighten the administrative workload so teachers can focus on teaching.
Examples include:
Coordinating volunteers
Organizing classroom donations
Sending reminders
Managing sign-ups
Helping communicate classroom needs
Always follow your teacher's preferences for communication and support.
The Room Parent role is intentionally designed to be flexible.
Typical commitment:
1–2 hours per month during most months
2–4 hours during months with classroom parties, field trips, or larger school events
Many responsibilities can be completed from home through email, text, or online sign-up tools.
Room Parents are not expected to:
Teach lessons or assist with instruction
Handle student discipline
Make classroom or school decisions
Replace teacher or school communication
Personally pay for classroom supplies or events
Attend every classroom activity
The teacher remains the classroom leader. Room Parents simply provide organizational support.
To ensure consistent and respectful communication:
All classroom messages should be approved by the teacher.
School-wide announcements come from the PTO or school administration.
Protect student privacy at all times.
Questions regarding academics, behavior, or individual students should always be directed to the teacher.
Serving as a Room Parent is one of the easiest ways to make a meaningful impact at our school.
Your time, organization, and willingness to help create a stronger classroom community for everyone.
We appreciate you!
