"Over the last years, online dating apps have become an increasingly popular platform for individuals seeking romantic partners" (Smith and Anderson, 2016)
With the increase in technology and smartphone apps, relationships can be formed online through a variety of dating sites and apps. Depending on the design of the dating app/site, one may have a goal of finding a long-term relationship or a temporary relationship, subject to their personal preference. For example, Tinder is an app that was created to introduce potential sexual or romantic partners based on their personal interests (Erevik et al, 2020). Some of these interests include basic demographics like sex, gender, sexual preference, location, and age. As of 2019, Tinder is considered to be the most trending dating app worldwide (Duguay, 2017; Timmermans and De Caluwé, 2017; Tinder, 2019). Tinder trending the most because of its simplicity, convenience, and its affordances. For simplicity, Tinder was designed to create a biography, upload a couple of pictures of the individual and begin swiping left or right depending if an individual was attracted to them based on their looks or biography (Erevik, Kristensen, Torsheim, Vedaa, and Pallesen, 2020). When it came to convenience, those who were considered single, were able to form relationships at their own time and pace. The last reason Tinder is the most trending dating app is because of the affordances it may have when it comes to the visual aspect of it (Ranzini, Rosenbaum, Tybur, 2022). In the majority of the studies conducted about online relationships, The Big Five Personality Traits were correlated with some kind of dating sites and social networking sites (Clemens, Atkin, & Krishnan, 2015).
There are many other dating apps, which mostly consist of heterosexual seekers, like Bumble and Hinge. Bumble is similar to Tinder in multiple ways. The app has the feature of swiping based on their profile and brief biography. Another comparison between the apps was, they were viewed as casual sex apps with no strings attached (Erevik et al, 2020). On the contrary, Hinge was an app that was meant to be deleted, meaning to find that perfect match. Hinge is considered to be more of a dating app than a causal sex app. Another dating app that was different from the others was, Grindr. Grindr was created for the LGBTQ+ community to create impressions of one another and to be comfortable enough to express their true selves (Ranzini, Rosenbaum, Tybur, 2022).
Dating sites tend to be another popular way to create online relationships. Some examples of dating sites would be Match, PlentyOfFish, eHarmony, ChristianMingle, etc. For example, ChristianMingle was designed to "match" those who have similar beliefs and values when it comes to God. These websites were designed to create matches based on scientific methods (Timmermans and De Caluwé, 2017). Scientifically, people tend to make connections with those who have similar interests like religion. There are multiple factors that can play a role when it comes to different types of reasonings behind using dating sites. One of the factors provided in the article was that some online users reported that they used online applications for entertainment instead of seeking love or a temporary partner (Carpender and McEwan, 2016; Timmermans and De Caluwé, 2017).
