The title of psychologist is protected by law in Belgium and in the United Kingdom.
An individual is legally allowed to call themselves a Psychologist only if they have graduated with a master's degree in psychology and are registered with the Belgian Commission of Psychologists. Each licensed psychologist will have a unique recognition number. Through recognition, psychologists are bound by strict legal and deontological rules.
Psychologists can choose a major during the master years of their training, e.g., clinical psychology, health psychology, occupational psychology, school psychology, with a view to employment in mental health care, general health care, business, a school/CLB, respectively.

All registered psychologists, regardless of their status, sector or work rules, are legally bound to the professional code of ethics. This code outlines the rules of conduct registered psychologists have to respect. It offers them a guideline for an ethically correct professional practice.

The code of ethics serves two major objectives:
Protection of the public: thanks to the rules of conduct, clients of registered psychologists are better protected against actions that do not belong in a psychologist-client relationship.
The professionalization of the profession of psychologist: the code of ethics of a psychologist forms the value and normative framework of his/her professional actions. By guaranteeing the quality of his/her services, the code contributes to the dignity and integrity of the profession of psychologist.
