There are many different Psychological models of coaching to choose from. In my experience, there is one model that helps everyone as each person is an individual and what might suit one person may not necessarily suit another. However, my main approach is that of Cognitive Behavioural Coaching.
Cognitive Behavioral Coaching (CBC) is a type of coaching that combines principles and techniques from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with the goal of helping individuals identify and modify unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour that may be preventing them from achieving their goals or living a fulfilling life.
CBC typically involves a structured and goal-oriented approach, with the coach and client working together to identify specific thoughts, behaviors, and emotions that may be contributing to the client's difficulties. The coach then helps the client to challenge and modify these patterns through a range of techniques, including cognitive restructuring, behaviour activation, and problem-solving.
CBC can be used to address a wide range of issues, including
anxiety
depression
stress
relationship difficulties,
and career concerns.
It is often used in the workplace to help individuals improve their
performance,
manage stress,
and develop new skills.
CBC differs from traditional counselling or therapy in that
it is focused primarily on the present and future, rather than on exploring past experiences or emotions.
It is also typically more directive and structured, with the coach taking an active role in guiding the client towards their goals.
CBC has been found to be effective for a number of reasons:
Evidence-based: CBC is based on well-established principles and techniques from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which has been shown to be effective in treating a range of mental health conditions.
Structured and goal-oriented: CBC typically involves a structured approach to goal-setting and problem-solving, which can help individuals to stay focused and motivated towards achieving their objectives.
Collaborative: CBC is a collaborative process between the coach and client, with the coach working to understand the client's perspective and providing guidance and support as needed.
Action-focused: CBC focuses on identifying and modifying specific thoughts, behaviors, and emotions that are preventing the client from achieving their goals, rather than simply exploring past experiences or emotions.
Transferable skills: CBC aims to help clients develop skills and strategies that they can continue to use beyond the coaching sessions, enabling them to maintain their progress and continue to make positive changes in their lives.
Overall, CBC can be a powerful tool for helping individuals to overcome challenges and achieve their goals, by empowering them to identify and change unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour.
How can CBC help me?
Cognitive-Behavioural Coaching (CBC) aims to help you gain a perspective about whatever is troubling you. Together we identify what might be stopping you from reaching your full potential and what action you need to take to change your situation.
The aim of CBC is to help you change your behaviour to that which is more productive and rewarding for you. The process helps you move towards becoming the kind of person you want to be attaining the outcomes you desire both personally and professionally.
Process
Step 1 - Introductory meeting / call - We offer prospective clients an initial Coaching introductory Session. It will provide you with:
an opportunity to consider whether you wish to work with me. It is just as important that you feel comfortable with me, as it is that I feels able to work with you.
It would be unethical for a psychologist to offer to work with you if s/he did not have the right skill base and where you would be better served elsewhere.
Step 2 - If you and I wish to work together we normally:
arrange an agreed number of sessions. If we are not to work together we try, wherever possible, to provide you with details of alternative practitioners.
There is no obligation to attend all the sessions arranged and you are free to terminate your programme at any time.
A mini review of our work takes place mid-point during the set. programme and a formal review is undertaken at the end of the agreed number of sessions.
Reviews provide the opportunity to jointly assess progress and what further action is needed if any.
If you arrive late for your session we still terminate at the usual time so as not to delay the next person. I leave 15 minutes between sessions to allow people wishing to remain anonymous the opportunity of doing so. The sessions for clients may vary in length from between one to two hours and the length of sessions is mutually agreed at the beginning of your programme. Apart from individual face to face meetings we are able to offer sessions via WhatsApp/telephone or Zoom.
I aim to be sensitive to the cultural and ethnic origins of individuals and to people's religious beliefs and sexual orientation.
