Perusall
On most weeks, you will annotate a video or article. You will also interact with others in the class. This gives you a chance to see what others think and share your thoughts.
Using the @, you can reply to others and have conversations, kinda...
Q- What is Perusall?
A- Perusall is a way for you to read and interact with others. It’s a mix of reading and social media… Kinda…
Q- How do I earn max points in Perusall?
A- Read the entire article (you might want to read a page or two at a time), as you go, think of a discussion that you are having, what are things that you might say?
"This reminds me of one time, in band camp…"
"I saw this on a Tik Tok…"
"You wrote xxx, but I think xxx, here’s more… "
Writing, “ditto,” “me too,” or “good job” doesn’t add to the discussion and while it might be nice, it’s not going to earn you points.
Write comments throughout the entire article (aim for 10 good comments), respond to the comments of others and create your own comments.
Q- How can I get a perfect score in Perusall?
A- It’s going to depend, but if you want to strive for perfection, I would read through the article, make a “main post” on every page of the article, no less than seven throughout the reading. Then go back (on multiple occasions) and comment on one or two students per page. Generally, grading is based on your best posts, so more posts will equal more chances for a perfect score. There’s also a handout here to help you.
Q- What is the breakdown of the scoring in Perusall?
A- Up to 5.4 points for great posts
Up to 1.8 points for reading the article over time and checking back to interact with others.
Up to 1.8 points for getting responses for your posts, which means you posted early enough that other people saw what you wrote.
Up to 1.8 points for others upvoting your post, which means you posted early enough that other people saw what you wrote.
Q- Can I improve my score after the deadline??
A- Nope, once the deadline has passed there are no "redo" options, do your best work from the start. If you have a bad week, the lowest Perusall scores are dropped.
Q- My grade shows up on Perusall grade book, but not in Canvas. Also, in Perusall there is a red exclamation next to the score. What do I do??
A- Go back into Canvas and click on the assignment from Canvas. Sometimes there was a problem with syncing. If you do that and wait a couple of hours it should sync up.
