10 or more hours 200 points maximum
Please note, there is no partial credit for completed hours UNDER 10. Also, I will not accept Steps late. You need to plan and schedule with your site so you can complete the steps on time. When you contact the site in August, work out a schedule that will work for everyone.
1- Use the CSUSM database to search for sites, you can only use sites in the S4 database. Below you will see a list of recommended sites, however, any site in the database is acceptable, as long as you can explain how the site will help you apply information from THIS class by interacting with live humans, in person.
Your site MUST be in the S4 database, you will not get credit for any work from a site that isn't in the database. One note, often the names are changed around, so instead of Escondido Boys and Girls Club, it might be Boys and Girls Club of Escondido, or Pablos Place (Boys and Girls Club). So you need to search the database. If you can't find a site, it's possible to add, but, it often takes several weeks, which means you won't be able to start, or get credit for the first steps.
This means, you watching movies or researching something won't work. No more than 10% of total hours can be training/administrative in any way, shape or form. Click this link for more information on CSUSM Service Learning. Your site must be part of the CSUSM database or the hours won't be approved.
2- In the first couple weeks of the course, begin contacting sites, make sure you complete the CSUSM registration process (check Files for file named Service Learning Placement). Contact sites early, you may need a background check that takes time and money. So ask and decide what works for you. Once you choose a site and submit for Step 2, you need to keep that site. If something HUGE happens, and you need to change sites, you need to alert me and change your site in the S4 database. You should not work at a site that you aren't matched within the S4 database. You need to work out a schedule with your site, come up with a schedule that works for you and the site. Don't wait until the last minute to complete your service learning, something will go wrong. Please plan ahead and finish everything early. Waiting until the last minute is always a recipe for disaster.
3- Follow and complete check-in documentation over the course of the semester. Don't wait until November and then send me email with reasons you didn't complete your hours. Treat your site like a job, stay in contact, communicate expectations and plan ahead.
4- When you complete 10 hour or more hours, submit the completed (tell me what you did every time that shows that you interacted with teen humans) signed time sheet to Canvas (bottom of Assignments tab) include handwritten note from Site Supervisor using the same pen that signed the signature spot that says, "Name completed ten hours" or something along those lines near signature. You can also have an email, saved as a pdf, confirming hours along with a breakdown of what you did and when. The due date for these is Nov 22, 2024, 8:00 AM. Upload early, just in case. The time sheet is available on Canvas, log into our class, go to Files, then go to the file named Service Learning Time Sheet. The time sheet needs information on what you did, times, dates and a signature (with written statement).
5- I have set up the steps so that you are doing some work earlier in the semester. You should have your first two site visits completed in early October. If you do not do this, you will lose out on the points for the steps and the points for the final grade.
NOTE-- There are often problems with the S4 database, positions aren't listed or whatever else. If this happens, contact the CSUSM folks to have them correct the database.
