Methodological Modifications
Methodology:
This section outlines the systematic approach adopted to design, enhance, and implement a vibration reduction system using Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs), viscoelastic damping materials, and AI-based optimization in borewell drilling machines.
Problem Identification & Vibration Analysis:
· Conduct field observations to identify sources and nature of operational vibrations in borewell drilling machines.
· Mount accelerometers and vibration sensors on the machine to collect real-time vibration data during drilling operations.
· Analyze the collected data using FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) and signal processing to determine dominant vibration frequencies and amplitude ranges.
Design of Vibration Reduction Components:
· Tuned Mass Damper (TMD):
o Design TMD with a specific mass–spring–damper system tuned to match the machine’s dominant vibration frequency.
o Perform theoretical calculations to determine optimum mass ratio, stiffness, and damping coefficient.
· Vibration Damping Sleeve:
o Design rubber or viscoelastic sleeves for shaft or rotary parts to reduce vibration transmission.
· Viscoelastic Damping Layer:
o Select and apply high-loss-factor viscoelastic material layers at structural joints or near vibration hotspots.
· Helical Groove Implementation:
o Incorporate helical grooves in rotating components to improve damping and reduce friction-induced vibrations.
Simulation & Optimization:
· Use CAD software to model all components and integrate them into the drilling machine assembly.
· Run modal and harmonic response analysis in FEA tools (e.g., ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation) to verify performance.
· Optimize damping performance by adjusting TMD and material properties in simulation.
The implementation phase focuses on translating the designed and simulated vibration control mechanisms into a working prototype and integrating smart AI functionalities for real-world use. It involves mechanical fabrication, sensor setup, software development, and field testing to ensure the solution performs effectively under operational conditions.
Mechanical Component Fabrication:
· Manufacture the Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) using precision-machined mass blocks, springs, and dampers based on the optimized design parameters.
· Fabricate vibration damping sleeves and apply viscoelastic layers to shafts and machine joints.
· Integrate helical grooves into shaft surfaces during machining to enhance energy dissipation.
Sensor Installation:
· Install vibration sensors (accelerometers) and temperature sensors at key points on the drilling machine.
· Ensure proper calibration and data logging to collect real-time operational data.
AI System Development:
· Train AI/ML models on collected sensor data to recognize normal and abnormal vibration patterns.
· Implement adaptive logic that enables real-time tuning of the TMD and alerts for maintenance needs.
· Integrate the system with an IoT dashboard for live monitoring and historical data analysis.
System Integration:
· Embed all components (mechanical and electronic) into the borewell drilling machine.
· Ensure compatibility with existing machine functions, structural integrity, and safety.
Field Testing:
· Conduct trials under actual drilling conditions.
· Monitor vibration levels, machine stability, and component temperatures.
· Compare performance with and without the damping system to validate effectiveness.
Feedback and Refinement:
· Analyse test data and operator feedback.
· Make adjustments to AI model thresholds, TMD tuning, or component alignment.
· Finalize the design based on performance improvements and stability.
