SELF-DETERMINED LEARNING MODEL OF INSTRUCTION + PEER SUPPORTS

(SDLMI+PS)

WHAT DOES SDLMI + PS LOOK LIKE?

Propel Project teachers in the SDLMI + Peer Supports (PS) group will support students of all abilities to participate in the following activities during each semester:

  • Special education teachers will implement the SDLMI in special education settings

  • General education teachers will implement Peer Supports and SDLMI Plus in the general education classroom. As described below, SDLMI Plus is a condensed version of the SDLMI that supports students to set and work toward group goals with their peers.

HOW DOES SDLMI PLUS WORK?

Peer Supports and SDLMI Plus will occur simultaneously in the general education classroom. To provide students with opportunities to set and work toward group goals with their peers, general education teachers will provide one 15-minute mini-lesson every 2 weeks for six weeks in each semester. Each mini-lesson includes a detailed lesson plan, PowerPoint as a visual support, and engagement features like video examples.

HOW ARE TEACHERS SUPPORTED?

Propel Project teachers in the SDLMI + PS group will receive training

specific to their classroom:

  • Special education teachers that will implement the SDLMI will receive two days of training, coaching once a month during implementation, and also learn about how they can support general educators in SDLMI Plus lessons.

  • General education teachers will receive one day of training in PS and SDLMI Plus and coaching once a month during implementation.
