The Propel Project was a 5 year research study that examined the impact of a comprehensive intervention combining two evidence-based practices, the Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction (SDLMI) and Peer Supports (PS). This study looked at academic, social, and transition to adulthood outcomes for high school students with autism in inclusive general education classrooms and during transition instruction across North Carolina, Kansas, and Missouri.
The SDLMI supported autistic youth to set and go after their own academic, social, and transition to adulthood goals. PS facilitated peer-to-peer supports to promote progress toward these goals in the general education classroom. The combined SDLMI+PS was designed to enhance outcomes in both areas and provide general educators with supports to enable all students to learn about goal setting in the general education classroom.
All participants with autism
received intervention to support engagement in general education settings and compensation.
All participating peers received the benefits of interacting with neurodiverse classmates.
All participating teachers received professional development, coaching, materials, ongoing support, and compensation.
Project activities were always embedded in teacher's regular school day.
In the combined condition, all students in the class received support in goal setting.
Classrooms are inclusive learning environments for all students.
All participating students received either the Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction (SDLMI), Peer Supports (PS), or a combination of the two interventions.
