PROPEL
EU HEU PROPEL - Development of innovative Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) in systems of city-district systems - a transnational comparative study.
Project duration: November 2022 - October 2025.
Project status: ongoing.
Funding: This project is funded under “Positive Energy Districts and Neighbourhoods for Climate Neutrality” https://jpi-urbaneurope.eu/ped/ JPI Urban Europe develops multi-annual call agendas based on the priorities defined in the JPI Urban Europe Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA).
PROPEL is based on
THE PED CONCEPT
“Positive Energy Districts are energy-efficient and energy-flexible urban areas or groups of connected buildings which produce net zero greenhouse gas emissions and actively manage an annual local or regional surplus production of renewable energy. They require integration of different systems and infrastructures and interaction between buildings, the users and the regional energy, mobility and ICT systems, while securing the energy supply and a good life for all in line with social, economic and environmental sustainability.” (https://jpi-urbaneurope.eu/ped/)
In the PROPEL project, positive energy districts (PEDs) are developed further by expanding the energy system of PEDs including transport means, adding bio-based energy-carriers from the food system. Food systems generate more than one third – 34% - of all man-made greenhouse gas emissions, while transports correspond to one fourth of the CO2 emissions. Adding innovative energy carriers via the food system and waste from green management connecting to the transport system via biogas energy, improving the possibility of off-grid operation contribute to making PEDs more viable from an environmental, societal and governance (ESG) perspective.
