FLORENCE
Florence is a mid-size Italian city of about 380.000 inhabitants, part of a big metropolitan area (greater Florence) of more than 1 million. Firenze can be defined as «daily use city» with 140.000 additional users coming in our city: the most of them are commuters (101.000), with only 28.300 residents going out for work; the rest of the users are tourists, a primary resource for our economy: before 2020 there were about 14 million tourists per year. It has been committed to sustainability long ago, subscribing Aarlborg chart in the early 2000 and many other following initiatives like CoM, Adapt, Green City Accord, etc. Florence started a path towards sustainability convinced that urban environment can be improved, together with quality of life, and that the city could actively contribute to EU targets. Analysing its specific situation, it became clear how peculiar it is for cultural heritage (UNESCO Word Heritage since 17/12/1982), landscape and arts with million tourists per year. The city has been awarded by European Energy Award with the Gold certification in 2021 and by CDP with A level. The city has started in 2010 a co-productive planning activity which produced the “zero volumes” urban plan, the SECAP and the Smart City Plan, adopted in 2015, which was already targeting the carbon neutrality between 2040 and 2050 through an innovative holistic approach. The main sectors for the interventions resulted to be buildings, transport and services where the municipality has heavily committed to obtain the expected results with a pack of integrated actions which will be able to change the emission profile of the city. The Smart City Plan has been tested in a city district during last five years in the framework of the Horizon SCC1 Replicate project: the Novoli-Piagge district has been object of an integrated action, implementing innovative technologies with environmental, social and economic impacts. After the test, a roll out plan has been developed and included in the new SECAP under adoption which has the ambitious target of net zero emissions in 2040, thanks to the good results monitored in 2020 with the 40% of savings almost achieved, through a complex and integrated set of actions including also the test of new business models and new fuels to boost the transition. In the new SECAP adaptation plays a significant role with a deep analysis of risks and vulnerabilities and a set of actions focused on ecological transition, “greening the city” (Florence has got a long history of public and private gardens and parks) and making energy infrastructures more resilient, promoting also local distributed generation.
