Do you have regular menstrual cycles (21-35 days)? Are you not on hormonal therapy or contraception and do not have any diagnosed serious reproductive health issues? Are you interested in exploring your experience during the menstrual cycle in more detail?
Then you're in the right place, because we are looking for someone just like you!
After the preliminary phase that took place in September (you can read more about it in a dedicated section), we learned a lot. This is mainly because of our dedicated co-researchers, who deserve the most credit and praise! 🤗 With fresh knowedge and insights, we are now stepping into the main phase of the research, which will take place in November and December. For this, we are looking for people interested in tracking their own menstrual cycle over a one-month period. This is a great opportunity to get to know yourself better and start noticing trends in your experiences based on different phases of the menstrual cycle.
First and foremost, we hope that through exploring your own experience, you will learn something about yourself. While doing this, you will also help us fill gaps in scientific research on the menstrual cycle. A double win, right? 😉 And don't worry, your results will be completely anonymous
You can find the timeline and other information about the research below. 👇
FINAL EVENT!
In January, we will have a final event / scientific women’s circle on researching the menstrual cycle. During this, we will present the findings from the research and open a dialogue about the experience of the menstrual cycle, as well as some possible ways to trck and study it. Join us! 🥳
What are we researching?
Changes in experiences throughout the menstrual cycle across different experiential dimensions.
Research question and goal?
With this study, we aim to fill gaps in the scientific understanding of the impact of the menstrual cycle on everyday experiences. We also want to povide our co-researchers with knowledge about how to do self-exploration and enhance their self-awareness using scientific methods.
As your insights and experiences play an important role in this study, we don't see you as a participant but as a co-researcher.
How are we researching?
We are using the Experience Sampling Method (ESM). The idea behind this method is that participants or co-researchers report their momentary experiences multiple times a day over an extended period by answering various questions. In our study, we will sample experiential states (momentary experience), as well as use a retrospective reporting on the experiences of the day.
We will do all of this using the Curious (about) Consciousness app, developed at the Center for Cognitive Science at the University of Ljubljana in collaboration with the company zerodays.
In addition to gaining insights into your own menstrual cycle, you will also learn how to observe and track your own experiences!
In the below infographics, you can find more details on the sampling dimensions, as well as get access to the entire questionnaire. 👇
We will be using the "Curious (about) consciousness" app, available on App Store and Google Play.
Experiential states
Over the course of one month, we will sample experiential states using the app (at least) three times a day. During the day, the app will send you several notifications as a prompt to complete the questionnaire about the experiential state during that moment. The questionnaire will guide you through various dimensions of experience.
Daily reflection
In addition to experiential states, we are also interested in retrospective reporting on the day. At the end of each day, the app will send you a notifications, which will serve as a propmt to report on your daily experience. This is a different questionnaire than the one mentioned above and you will fill it out once a day, at the end of each day.
Below, you can see some example questions for both questionnaires.
In addition to experiential states and daily reflection, there will be two open questionnaires that will always be available to fill in. You will fill them in whenever you have an additional insight or question, that was not answered with the two primary questionnaires.
1) Notes on experience: observations, possible research questions, additional insights, and self-assessments regarding experiences throughout the menstrual cycle...
2) Observations and suggestions: suggestions regarding the research itself and the functioning of the app.
Did we make an impression? 😁
