Principal Investigator
Hwa Young Lee is an Associate Professor in the department of mathematics at Texas State University (click here to see her faculty profile). Hwa Young completed her B.S. in Mathematics Education at Ewha Woman’s University, with a certificate to teach 6-12 mathematics. She also completed her M.Ed. in mathematics education at Ewha and taught math at Jangpyung Middle School and Seoul Global High School in Seoul, Korea for 7.5 years. She received her Ph.D. in mathematics education and M.S. in mathematics from the University of Georgia. Her main research interest is in investigating students’ mathematical thinking—specifically, students’ constructions of frames of reference, coordinate systems, and graphs—and in learning how teachers can facilitate and support their students’ mathematical thinking. Hwa Young enjoys making soap and floating down the San Marcos River.
Doctoral Research Assistant
Lucinda Ford is a doctoral student in Mathematics Education at Texas State University. Lucinda earned A.L.A. and A.A. degrees in liberal arts and general studies, respectively, at Oakland Community College before completing her B.S. in Mathematics at Andrews University. Lucinda’s main research interest focuses on students’ mathematical thinking. She is currently studying ways in which undergraduate developmental mathematics students understand fractions. In her free time, Lucinda enjoys spending time by the water.
Doctoral Research Assistant
Grace Morrell is a doctoral student of mathematics education at Texas State University. Previously, she earned her B.S. in Mathematics from Furman University in Greenville South Carolina. Currently, she is interested in students' collaboration and collective productive struggle in math camps. In her free time, Grace likes to watch the bachelor with Stephanie and Brandi.
Doctoral Research Assistant
Kate Ryan is a doctoral student in Mathematics Education at Texas State University and an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Austin Community College. Kate earned her B.A. in Mathematics at the State University of New York at Buffalo and her M.A. in Mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin. Kate’s main research interest is the mathematical thinking of community college students. In her free time, Kate enjoys reading, knitting, playing the drums, and getting outdoors when it isn’t too hot.
Doctoral Research Assistant
Brandi Rygaard Gaspard is a doctoral student in Mathematics Education at Texas State University. Brandi earned her B.S. and M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She is currently studying students’ development of mathematical identity in terms of how they see their relationships with mathematics in different settings. Outside of academic interests, she enjoys playing board games and eating pizza.
Doctoral Research Assistant
Stephanie Tarigan is a doctoral student in Mathematics Education at Texas State University. Her research interests are equity in mathematics K-12 classrooms and teacher education for pre-service and in-service mathematics teachers. Prior to her doctoral studies, she earned her B.S. in Mathematics from Howard Payne University. For three years, she taught mathematics to middle and high school students at Sekolah Pelita Harapan in Jakarta, Indonesia. In her spare time, Stephanie enjoys exploring local coffee shops, making art, and traveling.
Doctoral Research Assistant
Holly Zolt is a doctoral student in Mathematics Education at Texas State University. Prior to coming to Texas State, Holly completed her MS in Mathematics at Georgia Southern University. Her primary research interests focus on the teaching and learning of abstract algebra with her current project examining quotient group instruction. In her free time, Holly enjoys spending time with her friends, drinking coffee, and painting.
