What is Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC™) ?
Mindfulness practice is the first step in emotional healing, as it allows us to become more self-aware, and to recognize our difficult thoughts and emotions, and to observe them with curiosity and openness instead of running away from them or over-dimensioning them.
For its part, self-compassion teaches us to respond to these difficult emotions and thoughts with kindness, affection and understanding to help us find calm and comfort ourselves when we are going through a difficult time, just as we would with a Dear friend.
“Self-compassion is simply giving the same kindness to ourselves that we would give to others”- Christopher Germer
Dr. Kristin Neff describes self-compassion as having three elements:
Self-compassion requires taking a balanced approach to our negative emotions so that feelings are neither suppressed nor exaggerated. This equilibrated stance stems from the process of relating personal experiences to those of others who are also suffering, thus putting our own situation into a larger perspective.
Self-compassion involves recognizing that suffering and personal inadequacy is part of the shared human experience – something that we all go through rather than being something that happens to “me” alone.
Self-compassion entails being warm and understanding toward ourselves when we suffer, fail, or feel inadequate, rather than ignoring our pain or flagellating ourselves with self-criticism.
Scientific Research
In the past decade, there has been a tremendous amount of research on the benefits of self-compassion. Research has shown that self-compassion dramatically improves emotional well-being, provides emotional strength and resilience, allowing us to recognize our shortcomings, motivating us with kindness, forgiving us when we make mistakes or making mistakes, helping us to relate to others from empathy, and to be more comfortable in our own skin.
