Perhaps the greatest challenge facing professional artist and designers in the next couple of decades is automation. This will mostly manifest itself as artificial intelligence enabled software greatly increasing productivity to the point where significantly less production artists and designers will be needed across all industries. A.I. only recently left behind its method of number crunching through endless possibilities towards solving problems and doing work . A.I. now mimics the human brain's ability to think using pattern recognition and that is a game changer. In the immediate future this will effect creative work at the production level. A.I. is not nearing the concept of empathy and cannot conceptualize media that can connect with humans in an original way, because it does not yet understand what a human experience is like. Because of this, creative professions that are not focused on production art processes will be safe in the near future.

Stock Art overtook custom photography and Illustration in the late 1990s. Digital cloud storage and image search algorithms enables this massive industry change. It has cut the cost and time of production across multiple creative industries and forced photographers and illustrators into new business models.
News Writing: much of the news you are reading is written by A.I. This includes all manner of standardized reporting like weather, traffic, stocks, etc. The interconnected social network has created a huge class of citizen reporters and commentators distributing media digitally and decimating paper publications. This automation of on-line publishing from anywhere, anytime has devastated traditional journalism.
Animation production has been seeing a huge renaissance due to super efficient production tools like Adobe Animate and Maya. The growth is not being realized as an increase in job opportunities in the production areas, because those are being automated. Writing, storyboarding and production concept art jobs are growing however.
The GRID web design system is using A.I. to create rich websites for all manner of business. Companies literally fill out a questionnaire, upload images and a few minute later... a surprisingly good website is created.
