recreation and welfare
Inmates spend all their in the cell and are allowed one hour of "yard time" or "day room" every day, excluding Saturdays and Sundays.
Inmates are allowed to watch television, read magazines and newspapers 3 times a week (day room). Not all news is available and you only will be given old copies of The Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao, Berita Harian and Tamil Murasu. Certain news articles which prison authorities don’t want you to read will be removed. These are usually stories related to crime and racing results. Indoor yard time where you can play sports and exercise is twice a week.
Facilities for basketball and sepak takraw are made available. For male inmates, yard time is shirtless. You have access to a library of books during yard time and day room.
Due to Covid-19 regulations, you will be confined for 24 hours for at least seven days, either on your own or with others. Instead, you will be given books provided by the prisons and games like Chinese/Western chess (for those who are sharing their cells). During this period, each cell will be given 7 books. You can request for more books when you have finished reading but it has to be one for one exchange. You will not be allowed to read the books you brought in during the 7-day Covid isolation period. You will also have access to an e-tablet.
Prisoners can accumulate "points" throughout the length of their sentence and can redeem these points in exchange for certain benefits, such as extra visits, extra email correspondence with families/friends, tidbits, Lux Soap etc. These points may be taken away if prisoners are punished.
