Chapter 1, Example 6, page 13
Important teaching point the book gets wrong:
TRACE AMOUNTS
Rainfall is measured to the nearest 0.1mm.
The three smallest values are 0, tr and 0.1
0 means 0, there was literally no rain. 0.1 means 0.05 < r < 0.15
So “tr” means 0 < r < 0.05. If you are estimating this eg in a frequency table, use 0.025 mm.
The yellow box saying “Trace amounts…” is wrong, you cannot treat it as 0, you should treat it as 0.025 mm.
Exercise 1E, question 4, page 15
The answer is wrong, when calculating the mean, take the value of 0.025 for trace.
Exercise 2C, question 6, page 28
First printing: The marks for the exam style question both say (x marks)
Second printing: They now say (3 marks) and (1 mark). Fixed online.
Exercise 2D, page 29
Rounding either way is allowed in these questions
1d decimal 7.87 round to 7 or 8
2b decimal 22.4 round to 22
3b exactly 54
4c decimal 24.8 round to 24 or 25

First printing has a rounding error, standard deviation should be 6.29.
Fixed in THIRD printing and online, but worked solutions still wrong.
Section 3.4, Example 5, page 49
The answer to the example is given as 70.4, which is the calculated area, but the question wants an estimated frequency, so this should be an integer, hence 74.
Watch out for this in other questions.
Exercise 3D, question 2, page 50
The printed book still has several questions where the frequency is a multiple of the class width x frequency density. Eg 3D q2 said there were 90 people for an area of 60. This question and its answers have been changed online.
Exercise 3D, question 3, page 51
The book is fine, the worked solutions used 80 instead of 40 and doubled all of the answers, but an amended version has been uploaded.
Exercise 3D, question 7, page 52
This is generally fine, the online books have amended the answer for c to 8.94 instead of 9, but left d as 4.7 instead of 4 or 5.
Mixed Exercise 3, question 4, page 56
Here the total of 58 does not match the total area of 29. All the frequencies have been doubled. To fix it, change 58 to 29 and halve the answers, rounding 8.5 to 9.
Mixed Exercise 3, Challenge, page 57
Not an error, but the worked solutions use a complicated method. Students could just say 17/10 is 3cm higher than 4/20, ie fd of 1.5 = 3cm. 110-139 has width 30 and frequency 9, so fd 0.3, so height 0.6cm.
Exercise 4B, question 5c, page 66
The first printing had the units are wrong in the question.
The second printing and online say Dm.
Mixed Exercise 4, question 3a, page 66
In the first printing, on the graph, amend the x axis label to Number of items (n). Fixed in new printing and online.
Mixed Exercise 4, question 5c, page 67
In the first printing, there is a mismatch between the question and the answer, and both should be amended to:
The equation of the regression line of g on t for the remaining data is g = 99.6 – 5.2 t
c) Give an interpretation of the value -5.2 in this regression equation.
The answer on page 216 should then read
c) If the temperature increases by approximately 1 oC, the number of pairs of gloves sold each month decreases by 5.2
The worked solutions are now correct, as are the online books and second printing.
Chapter 6, Example 6, page 92
Top yellow box should read “use n=20, p=0.4 and x=7.” Fixed in second printing and online.
Chapter 6, Example 7, page 92
This error has been fixed in the printed book, but not in the online book. In the paragraph “Jane decides…” the second & third sentences should read “She wants the probability of winning a prize to be < 0.05. Each member of the class will have 12 spins and the number of reds will be recorded.”
Chapter 7, Section 7.2, page 102
Using the n=10 table the second yellow box should read P(X > 8) = 0.0123 (< 0.05)
Fixed in second printing and online.
Chapter 7, Example 4, page 103
In part a the upper tail inequalities are incorrect, and so the critical region is wrong
It should say
P(X > 18) = 1 – P(X < 17) = 1 – 0.9953 = 0.0047
P(X > 17) = 1 – P(X < 16) = 1 – 0.9884 = 0.0116
The critical regions are 0 < X < 3 and 17 < X < 40
Fixed in second printing and online
Exercise 7B, question 5, page 104
The question in the book is incorrect, and should say 5% for the answers to be correct. Fixed in second printing and online.
Exercise 7B, question 6, page 104
The question has been changed online and in the second printing. The book originally had a two-tailed test with 1% SL, but the online book has one-tailed with 5% SL. It no longer says “as close as possible”. The worked solutions match the printed book, not the new online version.
Exercise 7B, question 7, page 104
The answer in the book is incorrect, and should say X < 2 and ASL = 3.55%
Worked solutions are correct, and fixed in second printing and online.
Exercise 7B, question 9b, page 104
The question has been changed in the second printing and online to say “each tail as close as possible to 0.025”. This makes the answers and worked solutions correct.
Exercise 7D, question 8, page 109
The question has been changed online to add a part b, “state the p-value of the test” to which they have doubled the one-tail p-value of 39% to get a total of 78%. It’s worth reminding students that p-value is just jargon for the actual probability you worked out on your calculator.
This has not been changed in the second printing of the book.
Mixed Exercise 7, question 10, page 111
The question has been changed online to add to part c, “and p-value”, reinforcing the point in 7D question 7 above. Not changed in second printing.
Review Exercise 1, question 3a, page 113
The answer should be 27.2 not 27.3, the worked solutions use 60.5 as half of 120, not 60. This has been fixed in both online books and in the second printing.
