While the contest is titled "Young Author's Writing Contest", there is no age limit for submissions (as long as you're still young at heart!).
Submissions are accepted from contestants ages kindergarten and up.
The theme for the Young Authors’ Project is “Let Your Light Shine.” This theme can be interpreted and expressed in a variety of ways and can include the following ideas and perspectives:
Be yourself and be proud of who you are
Discuss how you share/can share your talent(s) with others
Write about how you have spread joy and kindness
Share how you found the positive during challenging times
Share how you have been a positive influence to someone and inspired others
Describe how you can make change happen
Authors may write prose or poetry, fiction or nonfiction.
Artwork must be drawn by hand or with computer tools.

Must be drawn by hand or with computer tools—no photographs, stock photos, or graphics. Appropriate content only!
Must be on blank, white 8½ by 11 inch piece of paper
Should clearly address the theme
Color may be used; originality and creativity are key components for judging
Any lettering and/or words should be neatly and clearly drawn/written
Leave a 1 inch blank border on all sides of the paper
Should not have the artist's name on design—the artist will be recognized on the inside of the book

Visual Impact (overall quality)
The unique organization of art elements, content, & execution create a striking and memorable work. It has the power to “wow” the viewer.
Interpretation and Creativity (completeness/effort/
adherence to theme)
The design shows unique and creative interpretation of the assignment and was continued until it was as complete as possible. Effort was far beyond that required, with great attention to details. The theme is clearly evident and well-executed.
Composition/Design (organization)

Shows and effectively utilizes knowledge of the elements and principles of design, combining three or more elements and principles. The design effectively fills the entire space.
Craftsmanship (made with skill of mediums and overall neatness)
It demonstrates a mastery of skill and a clear understanding and application of specific medium qualities. The design is beautiful and complete.
Criteria
All criteria of contest have been met. Student work demonstrates the best example of following directions for assignment.
All entries must be original creations.
Only 1 writing entry per person may be submitted. (*NOTE: Authors may also choose to submit for the art contest, but again, may only submit one piece of writing and one piece of art, total.)
All entries must have participated in a local level judging before being submitted to the state judging level.
All entries to the state judging level must be submitted by a member of NCRA.

All entries should:
Use 10 point, “Times New Roman” font, single spaced, for the body of the piece.
Include an original title, typed in bold, 12 point type, with only the first letter of each major word in the title capitalized.
Include author information after the body of the piece. Skip two lines and then center the following information in 10 point:

Grades K – 1: Entries should have no more than 200 words.
Grades 2 – 5: Entries should have no more than 300 words.
Grades 6 - 8: Entries should have no more than 400 words.
Grades 9 – 12 and Forever Young: Entries should have no more than 500 words.
EACH STUDENT/PARTICIPANT SHOULD COMPLETE THE FORM BEFORE SUBMISSIONS ARE MADE. PRICE READING COUNCIL (PRC) MEMBERS NEED TO KEEP THESE ON FILE FOR WINNERS.
