Synopsis
In a world where the supernatural is a manifestation of psychological trauma, high school student Koyomi Araragi survives a vampire encounter only to find himself drawn to the "Oddities" haunting his peers. The story begins when he catches a falling classmate, Hitagi Senjogahara, and discovers she is physically weightless—her mass stolen by a mysterious crab deity. Guided by the enigmatic specialist Meme Oshino, Araragi navigates a surreal urban landscape to help various girls afflicted by spiritual entities that feed on their emotional scars. As he travels through a series of increasingly bizarre supernatural phenomena, he witnesses the profound ways guilt and desire define the human spirit and the lengths people go to for salvation. His journey eventually leads him toward the truth of his own humanity, his evolving relationship with Senjogahara, and the fragile balance between the mundane world and the apparitions that inhabit it.
Bakemonogatari is a 2009 television anime produced by Aniplex and Kodansha and animated by the experimental Studio Shaft (Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Sangatsu no Lion, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei). The show was directed by the visionary Akiyuki Shinbo (March Comes in Like a Lion, Hidamari Sketch) alongside Tatsuya Oishi. The scripts were based on the light novels by the prolific Nisio Isin, showcasing his signature brand of dense, fast-paced dialogue and meta-commentary. Character designs were provided by Akio Watanabe, leaning into a sharp, modern aesthetic that contrasts with the show's abstract backgrounds. Satoru Kosaki (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) handled the eclectic, atmospheric, and highly melodic music composition.
