During the week of May 13th, 2019 Pratt’s Math and Science team composed of students Adelaide Steinfeld (HAD), Yesenia Valle Mora (HAD) and Stephanie Wong (ID) and alumna Katelin Fallon (MS HAD 2013) led by Prof. Del Federico and traveled the ancient Roman port of Ostia Antica to provide scientific support to archeologists and restorers at the site. Pratt’s team along with collaborators from RWTH Aachen university are the first scientists to work at the archeological site providing X-Ray, Infra- Red, and MRI technologies to study the material composition of wall paintings and artifact on site.

BFA in History of Art and Design 2020, MA in Art History
My name is Adelaide Steinfeld. I graduated from Pratt Institute in 2020 with a BFA in art history, I am currently studying for my MA in art history at Hunter College. I was a part of the Ostia 2019 trip where we used XRF to identify pigments in wall paintings, I used this research in my thesis project and was very interested in the identification of Egyptian blue. I’m looking forward to be a part of the continued research.

History of Art and Design 2013
Hi, I’m Katelin and I received my MS from Pratt Institute in Art and Design History with a focus in Art Conservation Science. While at Pratt, I traveled with Dr. Del Federico and Dr. Kehlet to work in Herculaneum, Italy. I enjoyed that experience so much that I have continued to work with Pratt since my graduation. In 2019, I was fortunate to join the team in Ostia. During my time at Pratt, I focused on pigments, specifically Egyptian Blue, and I loved that I could continue that research with the team in Ostia. I am currently a software developer for Lytho, Inc.

Industrial Deisgn 2020
Hi, this is Stephanie, I am graduating with an industrial design BFA in 2020 at Pratt Institute. I loved my experience in Ostia working with these amazing people! As a design student in Ostia, this is an invaluable experience for me to work with scientists and art historians to learn about the rich history, the technology, and the materials they used in the past. I am thrilled to have this opportunity to learn and explore Ostia Antica with these amazing people.

BFA in History of Art and Design 2020
My name is Yesenia. I graduated from Pratt Institute with a BFA in the History of Art and Design and am interested in the study of artist’s materials. I was fortunate enough to be part of the Ostia research trip in 2019 and really enjoyed learning about materials that have stood the test of time. I was most interested in learning about the visible-induced luminescence (VIL) technique in identifying Egyptian Blue. The Ostia research trip was a wonderful experience!
