Students will learn about the lifecycle of a butterfly and design their butterflies using the crayon resist technique. Students will learn about Yayoi Kusama and analyze her “Flowers” paintings. Students will create patterns on colored paper and make cutouts of a flower, leaf, and stem (I will be going with Tulip for the flower). They will then cut out their butterfly and collage all the pieces together to create a Kusama-inspired Artwork. Below is an example- 1. Patterns for background, 2. Butterfly cut-outs 3. Students analyzed the works of Wassily Kandinsky, learned to differentiate between Realistic and Abstract paintings, and recreated the "Color Study- Squares with concentric circles,1913, painting of Kandinsky" using their prior knowledge of Warm and cool colors. They also explored the crayon resist watercolor technique by tracing all their circles with crayons before watercoloring.
Sample Work to show students during the class. It was a working sample that I used to demonstrate the technique.

3D City/ Landscape: Crayon Resist technique background Layering
Sample works I did to show students some examples. This was a working sample I used to show the different techniques in class. The students are still working on the drawings of different layers.

Exploratory Collage: Students created animal pattern sheets using the crayon resist technique. They used these pattern sheets along with colored construction paper to create an abstract collage.

Galaxy 3D Pop out Artwork- Watercolor+ Salt Galaxy background and drawing of planets and space objects. Students will use strips of tag boards to create pop-outs.

Exploring and creating an informational poster on the birds of North Carolina- A Partner Project that involves research, drawing, and using different media to create an informational poster. Students learn about John James Audubon and analyze his paintings using the "See, Think, Wonder" Thinking Routine.
A working example I show the students every time they come to class. I pick small areas on the poster to show them the techniques and materials they can use.

Pop Art- Andy Warhol Inspired: Students created a tracer of a small daily object and created repetitive drawings on 11x17 paper. They then used different color schemes to fill the drawing with patterns and colors.
