How The Course Began

The original Prairie Arboretum Disc Golf Course was created through the vision, generosity, and hard work of the Freeman Lions Club, the Freeman Community Foundation, local businesses, and members of the Freeman community.

The Freeman Lions Club led the original project and received a $5,000 grant from the Freeman Community Foundation to help make the nine-hole course possible. The Lions Club also provided the original disc golf baskets and helped raise additional funds for the project.

Lions Club member Sam Sorensen designed the original layout and then helped install the course with the assistance of his grandchildren. Together, they mixed bags of Sakrete by hand to set the baskets and tee signs in place and turn the course design into a permanent community recreation feature.

The nine original tee signs were donated by local businesses and organizations, whose support helped complete each hole and give the course professional signage from the beginning.

The Prairie Arboretum is deeply grateful to the Freeman Lions Club, Freeman Community Foundation, Sam Sorensen and his grandchildren, and the original nine tee-sign sponsors for creating the foundation on which PrairieDisc continues to grow.
