元智大學經典50為高教先驅之通識教育活動。近年來，元智大學通識課程對經典閱讀活動著力甚深，希望能透過經典閱讀深化各層級的通識教育。去年「元智經典50論說文競賽」指定哲學家盧梭《社會契約論》以及大文豪托爾斯泰的《戰爭與和平》為讀本，鼓勵同學交織「社會契約」與「社會改革」兩個，針對實踐性的問題進行論述。去年活動表現最傑出的兩位同學，分別是來自史瓦濟蘭的 NJ 和來自美國的Mark，他們各自闡述他們對社會契約論的想法，更深入探討契約論與當代議題之間的的連結。

Classic 50 (50 Canonized Books) is a general education activity for the pioneers of higher education in Yuan Ze University. In recent years, Yuan Ze University’s general education courses have focused on classic reading activities to deepen general education at all levels through classic reading. Yuan Ze Classic 50 Essay Contest encourages students to discuss practical issues by reading classics. Last year,  Jean-Jacques Rousseau's treatise Social Contract and Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy 's War and Peace were chosen as readings for the first edition of this essay contest that aims to emphasize on the intersection between the concepts of social contract and social reform. The two most outstanding students in last year's event, NJ from Swaziland and Mark from the United States, each articulated their thoughts on social contract theory and explored the connections to contemporary issues.
