Zoom Video Conferencing

Beginning Monday, April 6, Piedmont Schools will use the remote video conferencing platform, Zoom, to meet with students in virtual classrooms.

On Monday, March 30, our IT department pushed out the Zoom extension to all district-owned Chromebook devices. If your student will be using a personal device, tablet, phone, or home computer, we encourage you to add the Zoom extension to this device to make his/her virtual classroom connection easier. Links to Zoom downloads can be found here.

Please treat your student's Zoom meeting like it is your student's classroom. We are all adjusting to this new normal way of education, and it is important to treat teachers and other students with respect. All teachers will have scheduled "office hours" for students and/or parents to schedule conferences or request extra help. We ask that all virtual "class meeting" times be for student participation only.

It has been brought to our attention that some Zoom meetings are being recorded and put on social media. For the privacy and respect of our teachers and other students in your child's class, please refrain from this activity. We have families in our district who have requested their child not be photographed or recorded for social media or website use and we must respect their wishes. Just as you would not record a lesson in a traditional classroom, we ask that you do not record in our virtual classrooms.

Below are some basic tips while using Zoom:

  1. Use your real name: Please use your first and last name as your username when signing in.

  2. Dress for Success: Make sure you have on appropriate clothing for a video chat with teachers & classmates.

  3. Show Respect: Take turns speaking and do not talk while others are sharing.

  4. Screen Sharing: No screen sharing without permission from the teacher.

  5. Using Chat: Remember to use appropriate language when asking and answering questions using the chat function.

  6. Mute is your Friend: Be sure to mute yourself when you are not speaking to eliminate background noise.

  7. Location is Key: Find a quiet area with good lighting and stay there throughout the Zoom meeting.

  8. Manners: Remember to use your manners during a Zoom meeting. Your classmates and teacher can see you! (Pay attention, stay off your cell phone, be engaged.)
