Dear Students and Parents,
The kitchen program at Paynesville Primary School has been focussing on championing seasonal fruits and vegetables and working to develop children’s cooking skills and understandings, especially in the area of measurement (cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, grams, etc.), different cooking terminology (fold, simmer, whisk, combine, etc.) and the different methods of cooking using stoves, ovens and grillers, etc.
During our time at home, I would like to encourage you to continue working with your children in the kitchen and make a time at least once a week to cook with your children as we have been doing in the kitchen. We have been making one savoury recipe followed by one sweet.
At the bottom of this page is a list of seasonal fruits and vegetables for autumn. Please select one of these from the list, find a recipe and make it with your children, encouraging them to take the lead.
The children have their knife licences and I encourage you to allow them to develop their skills in this area further under supervision. (Use terms like ‘bear claw’, and ‘tuck your thumb under’ to remind them.) They should all know the difference between a tea towel and a dishcloth and can help with the dishes too. The need for hygiene, prior to cooking and during cooking has also been covered.
The star ratings I use are the same as I use in my home. There is no two-star rating and no half stars. It makes it very easy when I look in my recipe books (which are all marked) to avoid one star recipes.
My email address is Serena.Jefferis@education.vic.gov.au and I look forward to hearing from you.
Enjoy cooking and the time to share with your families.
Kind Regards,
Mrs. Serena Jefferis
